Well, I stand on the back porch and gaze at the sunset,
notice some clouds at the edge of the sky.
not long ago rain used to fall here,
the last 15 years my fields have been dry.
now there once was a time when i was younger,
I grew desert roses, the best in the land.
When the last rosebud died, I cast down my shovel,
'Cause only a fool tries to plant in the sand.

Now the time passes only, and my crops are only
The soil and the salt and the scorn of this land.

The old caring motions, they return to my hands.

Not one drop has fallen on the fields of my heart.
And out in the distance, the corpse of my rosebush,
Pick up my shovel, and to it I start.

And I strike down upon it, without any mercy,
Tear loose its branches and sever its root.
But just as my spade pierces the heartwood,
I notice the green blood of life on my boot.
